The Cadillac® CMAG Pumped and Gravity Condensate Meter is a totalizing magnetic flow meter designed for compatible pumped and gravity condensate applications. Its full-bore construction provides an obstruction-free flow path with no moving measuring components inside the meter tube.

The CMAG uses Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction to measure conductive-liquid flow. As the liquid passes through the meter’s magnetic field, electrodes detect an induced voltage proportional to its velocity. The electronics use this measurement, the flow-tube area and the meter’s individual calibration factor to calculate and totalize volumetric flow.

The measured liquid must have conductivity of at least 3.0 µS/cm, and the flow tube must remain completely flooded during measurement. Gravity condensate installations may require a piping wet leg to maintain a full meter tube. Final selection should account for the liquid, flow range, operating temperature, pressure, pipe size, installation arrangement and required outputs.

Magnetic Flow Measurement for Pumped and Gravity Condensate

The Cadillac® CMAG Pumped and Gravity Condensate Meter is a totalizing magnetic flow meter designed specifically for pumped and gravity condensate applications. Its full-bore, obstruction-free flow path allows conductive liquids to pass through the meter without moving components inside the flow tube.

A uniform magnetic field enables the CMAG to measure flow accurately where limited piping straight run or an undeveloped flow profile makes installation difficult. The liquid must have conductivity of at least 3.0 µS/cm, and the meter must remain completely flooded during measurement. In gravity applications, a piping wet leg may be required to maintain a full flow tube.

04  |  Operating Principle

How the CMAG Measures Conductive Liquid Flow

The CMAG operates according to Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. When a conductor moves perpendicularly through a magnetic field, it generates a voltage proportional to the conductor’s velocity. Inside the CMAG, the moving conductive liquid acts as that conductor.

Diagram showing the CMAG magnetic flow meter operating principle using coils, electrodes and conductive liquid
CMAG electromagnetic flow-measurement principle

1. Magnetic Field

Encapsulated coils rigidly retained within the flow tube create a magnetic field across the meter bore.

2. Induced Voltage

As conductive liquid passes through the magnetic field, electrodes measure the voltage induced by its movement.

3. Volumetric Flow

The electronics use the measured liquid velocity, flow-tube area and the meter’s individual K-factor to calculate volumetric flow.

Individual Meter Calibration

Each meter has a unique K-factor established during a NIST-traceable flow test completed before shipment. Once this calibration factor is established, the converter can display the calculated flow in selected engineering units and retransmit the information through a 4–20 mA signal, conditioned pulse or available communication output.

Critical Measurement Requirement

The flow tube must remain completely flooded while measurements are being taken. Gravity condensate installations may require a piping wet leg to maintain a full meter tube. The measured liquid must also have conductivity of at least 3.0 µS/cm.

08  |  Installation Requirements

Installing the CMAG for Reliable Flow Measurement

The CMAG’s uniform magnetic-field design reduces the need for conventional flow conditioning and extensive lengths of straight pipe. Correct installation must still keep the flow tube completely flooded, use liquid with conductivity of at least 3.0 µS/cm and provide the piping arrangement required for the selected accuracy level.

Keep the Flow Tube Full

The meter tube must remain completely flooded whenever flow is being measured. An empty or partially filled tube will prevent dependable measurement.

Gravity-System Wet Leg

Gravity condensate applications may require a piping wet leg to maintain a flooded meter tube throughout the operating cycle.

Conductive Liquid

The measured liquid must have conductivity equal to or greater than the published minimum of 3.0 µS/cm.

Flexible Mounting

The individual meter K-factor is not influenced by the external piping arrangement or mounting orientation.

Straight-Pipe Requirements and Accuracy

Piping Arrangement Published Accuracy Installation Guidance
1.5 pipe diameters upstream and downstream ±0.25% of reading Measure the required distance from the meter centreline.
No external straight-pipe run ±0.50% of reading The meter can operate without additional flow profiling where the tighter accuracy level is not required.
Meter sizes 2 inches and below Refer to selected configuration The source documentation states that the flow tube itself satisfies the 1.5-diameter straight-run provision for these sizes.

Installation Near Piping Components

The CMAG is designed to respond to turbulent or tumbling flow and can accommodate space-constrained installations near elbows, tees and valves. Apply the stated straight-run requirement whenever ±0.25% accuracy is required.

Before Commissioning

Verify that the meter tube remains completely flooded, the liquid has conductivity of at least 3.0 µS/cm, the flow direction and electrical connections match the approved documentation, and the installed piping arrangement supports the required accuracy.

11  |  Frequently Asked Questions

CMAG Pumped and Gravity Condensate Meter FAQs

These answers cover the most common questions about CMAG applications, accuracy, turndown, installation, liquid compatibility and signal outputs. Final meter selection should always be checked against the complete process conditions.

1. What is the CMAG Pumped and Gravity Condensate Meter used for?

The CMAG measures and totalizes conductive-liquid flow in compatible pumped and gravity condensate systems. It may also be applied to hot water, chilled water, potable water and other compatible conductive liquids. In every application, the liquid must have conductivity of at least 3.0 µS/cm, and the flow tube must remain completely flooded during measurement. Gravity installations may require a piping wet leg to maintain a full meter tube.

2. How accurate is the CMAG?

Published accuracy is ±0.25% of reading when 1.5 pipe diameters of straight run are available upstream and downstream from the meter centreline. Without external straight-pipe run, published accuracy is ±0.50% of reading.

3. What turndown ratio does the CMAG provide?

Published rangeability is typically 300:1 or better at ±0.25% accuracy, 400:1 at ±0.50% accuracy and 500:1 at ±1.00% accuracy. Proper sizing remains important when selecting the meter for expected minimum and maximum flows.

4. Does the CMAG have moving parts or an obstruction in the flow path?

No. The full-bore magnetic flow tube provides an obstruction-free flow path with no moving measuring components. This avoids the mechanical wear associated with turbine and other moving-part meter technologies.

5. Which liquids can the CMAG measure?

The liquid must be electrically conductive, with a published minimum conductivity of 3.0 µS/cm. Condensate, hot water, chilled water and compatible conductive process liquids may be measured when the selected liner, electrodes, pressure class and temperature rating suit the application. The flow tube must also remain completely flooded during measurement.

6. How does the CMAG measure flow?

The meter applies Faraday’s law. Conductive liquid moving through the magnetic field generates a voltage proportional to its velocity. Electrodes detect that voltage, and the converter uses the meter’s individual K-factor to calculate volumetric flow.

7. Which outputs and communications are available?

Available outputs include a 4–20 mA analog signal and conditioned pulse output. Modbus and Profibus communications are also published as available. An optional LCD indicator/totalizer can display instantaneous and totalized flow locally.

8. Must the meter remain full of liquid?

Yes. The flow tube must remain completely flooded while measurements are being taken. An empty or partially filled tube will prevent dependable measurement. Gravity-fed condensate systems may require a piping wet leg to maintain a full meter tube throughout operation.

9. Can the CMAG be installed near elbows, tees or valves?

The uniform magnetic-field design is intended for installations where conventional flow profiling is limited. The meter may be installed in space-constrained piping arrangements, but the stated 1.5-diameter straight-run provision should be applied when ±0.25% accuracy is required.

10. Is the CMAG suitable for retrofit installations?

The CMAG may be suitable for many retrofit installations because of its full-bore design, short straight-run requirement, wide turndown and choice of integral or remote electronics. Suitability must still be confirmed from the liquid conductivity, ability to maintain a completely flooded flow tube, available pipework, process temperature, pressure, materials and required accuracy.
