Cadillac Meter Application Guide
Hot & Chilled Water Flow Measurement
Accurate, repeatable flow measurement for hydronic heating, chilled-water cooling and energy-management systems—without the wear, restricted flow paths and frequent maintenance associated with traditional mechanical meters.
Reliable Flow Data for Hydronic Heating and Cooling
Hot- and chilled-water systems depend on accurate flow measurement to monitor circulation, assess system performance and support effective energy management. Inaccurate or inconsistent readings can make it difficult to understand how efficiently heating and cooling energy is being distributed.
Cadillac Meter offers both magnetic and ultrasonic technologies for these water-based applications. The appropriate technology depends on the fluid, available piping, required outputs, installation conditions and whether an intrusive or non-intrusive measurement method is preferred.
Why Facilities Are Moving Beyond Mechanical Flow Meters
Traditional mechanical meters have long been used in hot- and chilled-water systems. Modern magnetic meters provide an obstruction-free alternative designed to reduce maintenance and support more consistent measurement across varying system loads.
Traditional Technology
Mechanical Flow Meters
Moving components interact directly with the flowing water and may be affected by wear over time.
Internal measuring elements can introduce an obstruction into the pipe.
Mechanical wear may create a need for inspection, servicing or recalibration.
Limited turndown can make broad seasonal and variable-flow operating ranges more difficult to measure.
Modern Alternative
Magnetic Flow Meters
Fluid velocity is detected electromagnetically, without a mechanical measuring element in the flow.
The full-bore design provides an obstruction-free path through the meter.
With no moving parts in the measuring system, routine mechanical wear is eliminated.
Rate and totalized-flow information can be transmitted through analog or pulse outputs for system monitoring.
Important: Magnetic flow meters require an electrically conductive liquid. Water and many water-based hydronic fluids are suitable, but final meter selection should always confirm fluid conductivity, temperature, pressure, pipe size and installation conditions.
Magnetic and Ultrasonic Flow Measurement
Cadillac Meter supports hot- and chilled-water applications with two different measurement approaches. Magnetic meters provide full-bore inline measurement for conductive liquids, while the CU-TE compact ultrasonic meter measures liquid flow non-intrusively.
Technology selection matters: fluid properties, pipe size, available straight run, system temperature, operating pressure, required accuracy and control outputs should all be reviewed before selecting a meter.
Where Hot and Chilled Water Flow Measurement Is Used
Accurate water-flow data supports system control, performance assessment, thermal-energy calculations and consumption reporting across commercial, institutional and industrial facilities.
Chilled-Water Systems
Measure chilled-water circulation between chillers, pumps, distribution piping and building cooling equipment.
Hydronic Heating
Monitor hot-water flow through boilers, heat exchangers, heating loops and other hydronic distribution equipment.
Central Energy Plants
Track water movement through central heating and cooling plants serving multiple buildings or large facilities.
Variable-Flow Systems
Follow changing flow rates produced by variable-speed pumps as building heating and cooling demand rises or falls.
Thermal-Energy Measurement
Supply flow data used with temperature measurements to calculate heating or cooling energy consumption.
Building Submetering
Measure consumption by building, tenant, department or process for allocation, benchmarking and energy-management purposes.
Flow Measurement Is Often One Part of a Larger Energy System
Cadillac Meter can help identify whether the application needs flow measurement alone or a complete BTU energy-measurement configuration.
Choosing the Right Flow Meter
No single meter is automatically correct for every hydronic system. Selection should reflect the available piping layout, fluid characteristics, required measurement range, installation method and connection to the building or energy-management system.
Limited Piping Space
CMAG Magnetic Flow Meter
The CMAG uses a specialized flow-tube and coil design intended for installations where a fully developed flow profile or long piping straight runs are unavailable.
Consider CMAG when:
- Mechanical-room space is restricted
- The project involves a difficult retrofit
- A broad range of changing flow rates must be measured
Conventional Inline Layout
EMAG Magnetic Flow Meter
The EMAG uses a traditional magnetic flow-tube design and provides an economical option where the required flow profiling and piping straight run can be provided.
Consider EMAG when:
- Adequate straight piping is available
- An economical full-bore magnetic meter is required
- The liquid is electrically conductive
Non-Intrusive Measurement
CU-TE Compact Ultrasonic Meter
The CU-TE provides rate and totalized-flow measurement using ultrasonic technology, without a mechanical measuring component projecting into the liquid flow.
Consider CU-TE when:
- Ultrasonic measurement is preferred
- A compact meter configuration is needed
- Both rate and totalized flow must be reported
Installation guidance: piping requirements vary according to the selected model and nearby flow disturbances such as elbows, tees, valves, reducers and pumps. Confirm the disturbance-specific requirements and final meter configuration with Cadillac Meter before installation.
